No-priority junctions

Most junctions of any importance have priority markings in one direction or another to regulate the flow of traffic and maximise safety. However, some junctions have no indication of priority, particularly in residential districts and on country lanes.

At T-junctions, the acknowledged order of priority is that straight-through vehicles crossing the T go first, followed by those turning into and then out of the stem of the T. In effect, the priorities are the same as if there were give way markings to favour the through road.

At unmarked crossroads the situation is more complicated, and there’s no clear priority. There’s no universal priority-from-the-nearside rule in the UK as in some other countries. The only guideline is that crossing traffic from any direction usually assumes precedence over traffic turning. So treat whichever road you’re using as one where you should give way, and proceed cautiously. In practice, traffic flows at these junctions are usually so light that problems don’t often arise.
